In our modern world, technology surrounds us—from the moment we wake to check our phones until we drift to sleep. Yet the question isn’t whether technology is good or bad, but rather how we can harness its power to live more purposefully and authentically. A powerful insight emerges from contemporary discussions on conscious living: technology’s true value lies not in the tool itself, but in how we choose to use it.
Living with Technology is the tenth chapter in our book, Midlife, New Life: Living Consciously in Midlife and Beyond, where we explore how technology impacts living more consciously. We share an overview of our Conscious Living approach to technology and highlight the relevance to the eleven dimensions of our Conscious Living Wheel.
Understanding Ourselves Through Technology
The journey toward conscious living begins with self-discovery. Today, technology offers remarkable tools for understanding who we are—from strength assessments to consciousness frameworks that help us identify our values and purpose. Rather than hindering introspection, these digital resources empower us to explore ourselves more deeply before deciding where we’re headed in life.
Technology Supporting Our Well-Being
From wearable devices that monitor our health to medical innovations that grant independence, technology has revolutionized how we live longer, healthier lives. Smartwatches and fitness trackers quietly support our wellness journeys, while digital tools help us manage finances and plan for our futures. Yet this dependence reminds us of an essential truth: resilience means knowing what to do when technology fails.
Connecting Across Distances
In a fragmented world, technology bridges impossible distances. Video calls connect us with loved ones across continents, while social media platforms enable meaningful relationships we might never have formed otherwise. Yet this same technology can isolate us—couples sitting together, each absorbed in their phones, missing genuine connection.
Finding Harmony
The most profound wisdom emerges when we recognize that technology itself is neutral. As thought leader Mikey Siegel reflects, “Modern technology is out of harmony with life’s natural rhythms because we, as modern humans, are out of harmony.” The challenge isn’t to reject technology but to intentionally decide our relationship with it.
The Path Forward
Living consciously with technology means asking ourselves meaningful questions: What mindset will give us the optimal relationship with technology? How might it genuinely help us? And crucially, what will we do when it fails?
Technology is a magnificent enabler of human potential. It helps us explore our purpose, maintain our health, express our creativity, and connect with others. But its true power emerges when we use it deliberately—honoring both its gifts and its limitations. By embracing this balanced approach, we don’t merely live with technology; we live more fully, authentically, and consciously.
